Bumblebees, Bats, Butterflies, Wildflowers and Hedgehogs
Supporting our native wildlife in our back gardens this summer!

A good wildlife garden is more than just a corner of a garden left to go wild. Whether you are creating a new wildlife garden, or have an established one, think of it as a nature reserve and you are the warden. This summer, Ecotopia.co.uk has some great ideas to help you make a difference for garden wildlife.

Check out the About Wildflowers Kit at £9.99. Here's a chance for everyone to learn those wonderful names like Policeman's Helmet, or Great Hairy Willow herb. This fab set contains 24 identification cards showing 48 colourful flowers, a wooden flower press, tweezers, wild flower seeds to start your own meadow, notepad and pencil to record your find and  lots of information on how to identify the different flower types.

Not only seen as a cute addition to the wildlife that frequents your garden, small mammals such as hedgehogs provide a much more important service. As being insectivores, they are an effective method in removing pests, such as insects and slugs from your garden flowers and foliage. Eating around 200 grams of insects each night, hedgehogs are often lured to gardens as a means of being a very strong pest control solution, without you having to use pesticides. Providing an inviting, warming habitat for small animals, the small mammal/hedgehog habitat at £45.99 makes the perfect home in your garden.

Bumblebees are beautiful little creatures They are also important pollinators of wildflowers and crops. 3 species are now extinct and 9 more are threatened - they need our help. It isn't difficult to make your yard, garden or even patio space a haven for beneficial bees. You'll be helping these important insects, as well as bringing more nature to your backdoor. The Bumble Bee Nester at £15.99 is constructed from thick durable timber (Cedar/Larch). It is important that nesting bees are kept dry. There is a hinged roof which can be opened to reveal an internal viewing window. The box comes supplied with dry nesting material.

Butterflies face mounting threats and need our help. Some face possible extinction. The Butterfly Habitat (£19.95) provides our flighty friends with their own little house for roosting, hibernating or laying eggs in the back garden.  This attractive Habitat combines a safe and interactive habitat with a central feed station. The central feed sponge can be charged with a sugar/water solution to encourage and help butterflies or it can be soaked with Wildlife World Butterfly Attractant to encourage colourful butterflies (with the exception of the Cabbage White) to the feed station/habitat. Butterflies will use the house for roosting.
There are around 17 species of bat in the UK and the law protects these wonderful animals and their roosts. The felling of dead, old and hollow trees along with the advent of "Dutch Elm Disease" and severe weather patterns in the UK, has considerably reduced the availability of natural roost sites for bats. Encourage bats in your back garden with The Belfry Bat box at £15.00 . This  oak/larch double chambered box provides habitat for many bats. The heavy construction provides good insulation and longevity, as well as preventing predators from chewing the entrance slot. The Chavenage box at £12.99 will fit into any garden, woodland or house wall site. It’s made from strong Cedar/ Alder timber providing longevity, excellent insulation and protection from predators.
