A global switch to efficient lighting systems would trim the world's electricity bill by nearly one-tenth. That is the conclusion of a study from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which it says is the first global survey of lighting uses and costs. Our eco bulbs produce the same amount of light as incandescent light bulbs whilst being responsible for the emission of 70% less carbon dioxide. It also saves money, about £7 per year in the UK.
Around 19% of an average household's electricity consumption is via lighting (DEFRA), and a single 100W bulb could be responsible for 63kg of CO2 per year, but switch to a
low energy bulb (18W) and that figure will be reduced to around 11kg.
